Speaking of which, may I introduce you to Nick White, our protagonist in RUTHLESS.Mr. White, needing an ego boost, played a game with the wrong person, at the wrong time, and ended up in a very bad situation. A situation so bad, I was trying to telepathically help him. Being a Rector fan, I knew that at some point a careless decision could be a major turning point (“Pick up that check Nick!”). I wanted to help the man but he did not listen to me. Okay, at this point, I realized I was getting on the rollercoaster and fumbling with the safety bar. If you’ve ever ridden a rollercoaster, you know the rush, the stomach drop, the screams (in my case they were silent) and the relief when the thing stops. Nick White’s good intentions drew him deeper and deeper into Abigail’s mess. The “Gooder” Nick got the “Badder” things became.
If you like sharp, taut, precision writing, then RUTHLESS is the book for you. Not as gritty as some of his other books, but no less intense. If you are one of those people who thinks they can figure out the ending of a book ( once upon a time, this may or may not have been me, but I digress) then I challenge you to read RUTHLESS, that’s right, “Challenge”.
If you are familiar with this author’s work, you should be excited right now; if you have never read this writer before, then you are in for an extraordinary experience; he is the game operator whose line you get in again because you realize, that was one awesome ride! I call it the “Rector Effect”.

The story line is a bit unrealistic but the character development is good. He certainly doesn't lead you to like women very much. Men either, to be truthful. Maxmontgomery
Mr. Rector is back with another tight, fun thriller with multiple twists and turns just in time to kick off the summer reading season. If you've read Rector in the past you know and love his Hitchcock style and mastery of spare prose along with his exploration into the dark margins of that exist just outside of normal life. I've been a fan of Rector's ever since COLD KISS and RUTHLESS belongs right along side his other work.
No plot. no storyline. No ending. I wanted to like this book, but man, I have never read such pointless fiction. Someone out there please explain this novel to me, because it is completely lost on me.
I ordered the kindle edition and read it straight through! What an awesome story! I feel like I watched a great movie - looking forward to seeing it on the big screen some day! I especially love the style of dialogue...Rector doesn't assume that the reader isn't smart enough to figure out who's saying what. A really smart writer. LOVED it READ it!!
4 stars bc the writing is fluid, unencumbered. Interesting plot, but wished for more developments. Nick she have least warned his father @ Kara - just in case. Last part shd have had 2 so-called suicides, not one. And what @ Abby's inheritance? Would make a good movie - even with pilgrimage related to "Orphan Black".
One of the best reads I've encountered in a while, and that includes some best-selling authors. The plot is twisted, and keeps you guessing throughout the book. At no time did I feel as if the story was being dragged out or stalled to achieve added length... one of my all-time irritations with a book. The pace is excellent and it is action-packed from cover to cover.
My one disappointment was with the ending, but I expect another book where it continues to a more decisive conclusion. If not, I can still live with how it was concluded.
I've just purchased my second book by this author. Hopefully I'll be as delighted with it as I was with this one.
Poor Nick. He falls into a trap while getting a drink at his favorite dive bar, Mickey's. A chance encounter with a
blonde drinking a martini turns out to be the worst meeting of his life. John Rector has written a fantastic thriller that grabs you and doesn't let go. Twists and turns will shock you and keep you guessing. John Rector is one of my favorite authors and his latest book did not disappoint. I wish it was longer but this short book packs a big punch. Read this, you won't regret it!
